11/5/2011: Stumbled upon this site while on a rare memory trip. Saw a bunch of familiar names and felt bad about the names that were missing--mine being one. So here I am. What a wandering road I've been on! Following Conestoga (and because of), I set off to right the ills of public education. Started at Antioch College and eventually graduated from Goddard College (VT) in elementary ed. In the process my heart embraced woodworking. Started teaching in a Phila. elementary school while still at Goddard--convinced the school to let me start a woodworking program which I taught for 4 years. Didn't have much effect on the ills of public education, but the kids & I had fun. Married and divorced in Philly--not fun. Tried to get into a woodworking school for a graduate degree, but couldn't. Ended up at Harvard U. for an Ed.M. (Thanks, Conestoga!) and then off to Vermont (1977) to learn woodworking in a serious way. Bumped around in VT getting good training in woodworking and how not-to-run a business. Lost a bunch of money, but learned a lot. Learned about poverty first-hand, too. Struggled through a few relationships. On to Roanoke, VA for a couple of years; taught in an alternative elementary school. Too hot & humid, but beautiful country. Back to PA (Stroudsburg area) for a few hand-to-mouth years as a custom woodworker. Also worked as an artist's assistant and supervised a ceramic production studio in NJ. Still hot for doing fine woodworking, I took off to Maine for a job building custom bus interiors (1986). Did one for Greenpeace--pretty cool. Maine has become home. I found a family here. Hooked up with a beautiful & funny woman and her three kids. Finally married (1993). Lots of ups and downs and a few scares. Now I have 4 grandkids (and I mean Grand!). A back injury eventually led to working with disabled adults. After a year, I was invited to set up a furniture manufacturing business to train & employ disabled adults. An amazing experience! That led to getting an M.S.W. in clinical social work (1995). Have worked with the toughest kids and families in southern ME. Also, set up Maine College of Art's career service and counseling service. A very good school! Most recent job was running the children's service in a psychiatric hospital. Unbelievably tough job, but rewarding. Healthcare funding changes led to being laid off a year ago. Been volunteering in a local agency for disabled folks and looking for work since. Doing some woodworking. Just hooked up with 2 guys; we plan to address the ills of the poor economy and the high rate of joblessness in southern Maine. Give me a shout if you want to know how we do. . . Regards and best wishes to all!
